July 20, 2008: Volcano Art Center’s ‘Ohana Sunday Features Honu
Have you noticed the three giant, colorful honu waving from the front of Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village?
On July 20 at 2 p.m., Volcano Art Center (VAC) welcomes the creators of this project and the artists of VAC’s sea turtle parade at its fourth ‘Ohana Sunday in 2008, a series of lectures on the art and culture of Hawai‘i. “Honu-ette” Karen Kaufman tells the story behind this year-long, island-wide community art project. Honu artists Marian Berger, Michael Davis, and John Dawson offer the inspirations that led them to create their own individual giant honu.
‘Ohana Sundays are free of charge, however calabash donations at the door are always welcome.
VAC’s Niaulani Campus is located about a mile from the entrance to Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. From Highway 11 near the 27 mile marker, turn onto Haunani Road into Volcano Village, then turn left onto Old Volcano Road. After passing Kalanikoa Road, turn into the first driveway on the right and park.
For more information, call Volcano Art Center at 967-8222 or visit www.volcanoartcenter.org.

Parker School Adds Colorful Seascape to the “It’s a Honu World™” Art Parade
Parker School Adds a Colorful Seascape to the “It’s a Honu World” Art Parade
According to Hawaiian legend, Kauila, a magical sea turtle who loved children, would turn herself into a girl so she could play with youngsters and keep them safe. Now, the children of Parker School are returning the favor.
Pencils, markers, and paintbrushes in hand, they crouched, lay, and kneeled below a life-size fiberglass sea turtle, decorating it in vibrant colors. Students from kindergarten through fifth-grade drew a seascape filled with coral, sharks, octopi, sea horses, monk seals, seaweed, and mermaids.
The 5-foot sculpture is part of what is being called the “greatest art exhibit in Big Island history”: the “It’s a Honu World” public art parade organized by Kinaole Group Ltd.
Artist and Parker School parent Patrick Ching, owner of Naturally Hawaiian Galleries, purchased the undecorated sculpture, then decided Parker Lower School students could help him paint it.
Ching painted the head and uppermost portion of the shell and flippers, his 7-year-old daughter Kawena painted the huge octopus in the middle of its shell, and the rest was painted by her schoolmates at Parker Lower School.
Stop by to see the sculpture at Parker School. It is one of several painted honu, created by various artists, comprising an “art parade” around Waimea and the Big Island. All the honu in the parade will be auctioned in September. Proceeds from the Parker School honu will go to the school’s scholarship fund.

Well, as you can imagine, there are artists around the Big Island sanding, painting, gluing… and we can only imagine what else! Just like you, readers, we donʻt know what this exhibit will look like, we hear bits and pieces, see a photo here and there.
We are very excited to announce that Matson Navigation (thank you Russell Chin!) chose the children at Kamehameha Schools to paint their Honu. After about ten minutes of a meeting with Kamehameha School teachers this past week, the ideas which began to flow put huge delight into the minds of, well, yours truly and her husband. Oh my! This project is amazing folks, we get chicken skin daily!
