This Honu represents the Big Islands connection with not only the world, but the Universe. This celestial honu deals with the newest theories in physics: Space-time and “String Theory” (the idea that there are more than just 3 dimensions…now they are saying 11). As you find out about this Honu you will find that it too has many dimensions.
The Big Island is in the ocean on the honus back. It represents how this small speck is the center of the universe when it comes to celestial research. With our observatories on Mauna Kea, there is no place on this planet that plays a larger role.

Our beautiful island is also one of the “newest” places on the planet, where land is being created on a daily basis with lava from Kilauea. With this we take our place on the planet as having the newest land, yet being a place of discovery for the oldest places in the universe. When we look into space, we are in essence looking back in time.
The honu is leaping off the sun, the center of our universe, out into the great unknown. Our planet revolves around the sun and with it we find our place in the universe.
The belly is created with mirrors which represent the illusion of dimensions, and the pattern that is portrayed is that of a “fractal”. Fractals are mathematical formulas that describe things to minute degree. They create geometric shapes that are a repeating pattern within itself. All objects in nature are composed of fractals. Therefore this sculpture also deals with the micro and macro of the universe.
The rainbow is another illusion created by the “smoke and mirrors” of our planet. A trick of light, water and reflections create the optical vision. Rainbows are made of photons that are both particles and waves. It disappears as time passes.
The remaining painted areas of the Honu are like the universe filled with stars, planets, black holes and galaxies, most of which we still know little about. This leads down to our own atmosphere of sky and clouds.
With this Honu I am showing the importance of the Big Island and that we have a special place in the universe, making it truly “A Honu World”.
