“In this work, the Honu design pays homage to the rich legacy of the graphic art of Polynesia, as found in kapa, sculptural, and tattoo designs. Some of these ancient motifs can be traced back thirty thousand years and are found all over the world in various forms. Others are seem unique to Polynesia and specific to certain islands. Characterized by bold, geometric patterns, as well some freehand curvilinear motifs, these designs continue to intrigue the viewer as much today as they did thousands of years ago. We owe this remarkable graphic heritage to the many thousands of unknown artists over the millennia. The Kapakahi Honu is my contribution to this river of design over the ages.”
