“Aloha ‘aina” (Love of the Land)

“Aloha ‘aina” was how Richard Smart, of Parker Ranch, would greet people according to Dr. Billy Bergin’s book “Loyal to the Land, the Legendary Parker Ranch, 750-1950”. FW Hendriks, inspired by those words, felt “Aloha ‘aina” would be a fitting name for a Honu dedicated to the Hawaiian Paniolo.

The Hawaiian Cowboy has a rich history here on the Big Island, with strong ties to Hawaiian culture and traditions. Since moving to the Big Island in 2005, FW Hendriks has been fascinated with the Hawaiian Paniolos and ranch lifestyle as a medium for his artwork.

“Aloha ‘aina” represents present day Paniolos and acknowledges those in the past. The artwork on the shell and belly are drawings done in the artists “photo realistic” style. He uses pen, inks, pastels, watercolor, colored pencils and airbrush to achieve this effect.
The shell depicts a window into present day ranching. Moving cattle over the rugged Hawaiian terrain, branding, doctoring, and the “Hawaiian” way of roping calves.
The belly, is drawn in black and white, to represent a window into the past. When the Paniolo came to be, to control and work with the thousands of cattle roaming free over the island.

The heart of the Honu has been painted red, as this is the color that represents the Big Island of Hawaii.
For more information on the Hawaiian Paniolos & ranching on the Big Island, the artist highly recommends Dr. Billy Bergin’s books: “Loyal to the Land, The Legendary Parker Ranch, 750-1950” and “Loyal to the Land, The Legendary Parker Ranch, 1950-1970, Volume 2” or visit the Paniolo Preservation Society website at: www.PanioloPreservation.org
FW Hendriks would like to extend a Big MAHALO to Edward and Sally Evans for sponsoring “Aloha ‘aina” and Parker Ranch Center for displaying “Aloha ‘aina”.
